Deadly Tornado Strikes Georgia, Severe Weather Outbreak 1-29/1-30 2013
A deadly tornado stuck the town of Adairsville, Georgia this morning leaving at least one dead and several more injuries. The storm was embedded within a squall line and was moving extremely fast when it hit the town. Before this fatality today, the US had set a record for most days without a tornado-related fatality with 220 days, since records had been kept in 1950. Check out the INSANE video (below).
This was a classic high shear/low instability setup in the south, and isn't unusual as most people think. Luckily, this event was forecasted several days in advance and after April 27th, 2011, people in Dixie Alley are more weather-aware than ever before. Today's severe weather reports totaled 262, with 7 of those being tornadoes.
Don't forget to check out "Tornado Chasers" now available at a bulk rate of $19 for all episodes 1-12! For updates on warnings and real-time weather information, be sure to follow Reed's Facebook fan page and Twitter account and stay informed!]]>

Information on Tim's TWISTEX field project can be found here.
This past March, Tim took the time to join Reed and Joel to talk chasing during a podcast. That can be viewed here.
In closing, I would like to share two of my favorite videos from Tim and his team:
Tim was fascinated by high-speed lightning photography.
On April 14 of last year, Tim and his team captured some of the best video of the year, as they tracked the powerful Langley, KS tornado.

First HIGH RISK of the year: June 12, 2013
**************
Also, a brief update on the May 31, 2013 tornadoes in Oklahoma. As is now widely known, the May 31, El Reno tornado has been officially rated as an EF-5, making TWO EF-5 tornadoes within 30 miles of one another within the course of 11 days. Mobile radar trucks from the University of Oklahoma measured winds approaching 300 MPH during the tornado's peak intensity; the path was also measured (conservatively) at 2.6 miles, making this the largest tornado ever recorded in the United States. This incredibly intense storm claimed the lives of at least 19 people, including our friends and colleagues Tim Samaras, his son Paul Samaras, and Carl Young.
For more information on the tornadoes on May 31, please visit the NWS web page devoted to the event, here.

Bank holiday washout to be followed by sunshine and blue skies
After more than two inches of rain in some areas, forecasters say Monday will be one of the most pleasant days of the year
The August bank holiday has been a washout for some southern and eastern areas hit by flooding, but forecasters have predicted a return to sunshine and blue skies as the country enjoys one of the most pleasant days of the year.
Heavy downpours led to flash flooding in some southern and eastern areas on Saturday, with Suffolk, Kent, Essex and London seeing up to 0.4ins more rain fall overnight. In Wales and the West Country, meantime, holidaymakers enjoyed sunshine and clear skies.
According to Tim Thorne, a forecaster at the Met Office, the whole country can now look forward to better weather. "It's been a mixed picture in recent days with heavy downpours in Essex and the south-east, while the west has been lovely," he said. "But we have an improving picture over the bank holiday.
"Believe it or not, on bank holiday Monday we could see one of the most pleasant days of the year for the whole country.
"It may start off cloudy in some areas of Scotland or Northern Ireland, but by the afternoon any cloud will have largely cleared and it should be an excellent afternoon and evening with above average temperatures. It's going to be a nice day to be out and about whether you've having a barbecue or heading to the beach."
Only the Outer Hebrides were threatened with a little rain, he added.
High pressure will remain over much of the country for the next week, with reasonably warm temperatures of between 21 and 25C, he said.
Some parts of Essex saw more than two inches of rain on Saturday, which caused flooding and major disruption in the south of the county. The emergency services answered more than 400 calls for help.
A family had to be rescued from their four-wheel-drive car after it became trapped in floodwaters under a railway bridge. Scott Swinford, 30, of Southend, was driving with his three children when the car was caught in rising waters on Spa Road in Hockley. "As I put the car into reverse the current of the floodwater just lifted us further in," he told the BBC.
The group was rescued by onlookers Hannah King and Emma Burles, and three boys watching the floods. King, 22, said: "The water just swept the car along. We saw there was young children in the back and then a little girl stuck her head out of the window. That was it, we just swam in as we knew the car was going to sink."
The rescuers passed the children from the car to the three boys who also waded into the floodwater to help. Swinford was then helped out of the vehicle.
He said: "My 4x4 is like a monster truck, stands about 7ft high and is fitted with a snorkel exhaust. We'd already driven through some flooding, but as I went into this I thought 'it's deep' so put the car into reverse. I thought the motion of the wheels would drag us out, but we just started sinking. The water was coming in through the floor, air vents and windows."
The BBC Weather Centre reported that 2.3ins (59mm) of rain had fallen across the south of Essex on Saturday, some of the highest rainfall in the country. Revellers at the Reading and Leeds festivals were also soaked over the weekend.

Father of Essex family saved from sinking car thanks rescuers
Women waded into floodwater in Hockley and pulled children from windows of 4x4 vehicle stuck under railway bridge
A man has paid tribute to rescuers who saved him and three young children from a sinking car after it became trapped in floodwater.
Dramatic video footage captured the scene as the youngsters were pulled from the windows of the 4x4 vehicle after getting stuck under a railway bridge in Hockley, Essex, on Sunday.
Scott Swinford, 30, from Southend, was in the Mitsubishi Pajero with his eight-year-old son Reece, his niece, Jessica, six, and four-year-old nephew, Alfie, when they became trapped.
Friends Hannah King, 21, and Emma Burles, 26, from Hockley, waded into the 6ft-deep water to rescue the group helped by three young men who had gone to watch the floods.
Burles, a mother of one, said: "A lot of people were standing around at first but I don't think they realised how serious the situation was. It's such a crazy thing to happen.
"When I saw there were three children inside I think my mother's instinct kicked in. At first the children were calm but when the water came up to their legs they started to get scared. They were really cold, the girl's lips were blue."
The rescuers pulled the children from the car before helping Swinford escape.
They were later given shelter at the nearby Lime Court sheltered housing scheme.
Swinford said: "My vehicle is 7ft-high and been through lots of flooded roads. It's built that way. I've never seen anything like that before. As I put the car into reverse the current of the flood water just lifted us further in. I quickly opened the windows so we wouldn't become trapped but the water started coming in through the floor, air vents and windows."
Swinford eventually recovered his vehicle by tow truck at about 11.30pm when the water had subsided.
He said: "I just want to say to everyone who helped us – a big thank you."
A video of the incident uploaded to YouTube by Andy Cause has attracted thousands of views.
A user comment on the video said: "I would like to say a very very big thank you to all the people that helped rescue my Grandchildren & my Son-In-Law you were all brilliant thank you all again from the bottom of my heart you all done a fantastic job xxxxxx."
Heavy flooding has caused significant disruption in parts of the county over the weekend, with Essex fire and rescue answering more than 300 calls for help as the result of overnight floods.
