Hurricane Sandy wreaks havoc along the East Coast!

Hurricane Sandy, as of this writing, has been responsible for at least 88 US deaths, along with 43 in the Caribbean, making it the 4th deadliest hurricane in US history.  It also left millions of people without power and the damage will be in the billions.  Sandy was a very unique storm, making landfall as a category 1 hurricane and then became a post-tropical storm, bringing blizzard conditions to the Appalachian mountains and surrounding areas, with up to 3 feet of snow in some locations!  She made landfall Monday evening, very close to Atlantic City, where major damage occurred along the Jersey Shore.TVN covered both facets of the "superstorm" with a team of Dave Holder, Mike Scantlin, Chad Cowan and Blake Knapp covering the hurricane in NYC, where massive flooding occurred along the coastal waters, and where a major fire erupted in Queens late Monday night.  Reed Timmer and Connor McCrorey covered the blizzard part of the storm, streaming live video and documenting massive snowfall amounts from Elkins, West Virginia!  Check out both videos up, below!

Due to Hurricane Sandy this week, both the podcast and "Tornado Chasers" have been pushed back to next Tuesday night (8 pm CDT) and Wednesday, respectively.  Also, episode 1 of "Tornado Chasers" is up online for FREE, watch below!  Those who purchased episode 1 should have received an email this week about gaining free access to episode 7, which will debut this Wednesday here!

Florida Tornadoes, TVN's 12 Days of Christmas

On Monday, there were at least two confirmed tornadoes, with one being a high end EF-1 near Edgewater, Florida, where it destroyed some houses and took the roofs off of others.  The other tornado occurred over Lake Apopka, and lasted just a few minutes.  Thankfully, no fatalities were reported.  There have also been tornadoes reported in Italy, Poland, South Africa and Uruguay over the past week or two, with several fatalities.  This late Fall has been a deadly one for tornadoes outside of the United States.  The US may actually have the fewest tornadoes in quite some time for 2012, with only 893 tornadoes (10 year average is around 1300) confirmed so far this year.  Check out the video of the Edgewater tornado below!

Don't forget, episodes 1-10 of "Tornado Chasers" is available at ANY time, for unlimited streaming or HD download here.  Next Wednesday's will be INTENSE, with extremely close-range video of the Wheatland, WY tornado that passed just yards in front of us with suction vortices dancing around!

Deadly Tornado Strikes Georgia, Severe Weather Outbreak 1-29/1-30 2013

On January 29th, the Storm Prediction Center had issued a moderate risk for a big chunk of the mid-south with the primary threats being damaging winds and strong tornadoes.  Numerous tornado watches were issued and most of the severe weather started Tuesday evening and ended Wednesday evening.  All-in-all Tuesday had 324 reports (image, left) with most of those being damaging winds, although 13 tornado reports were recorded.  One fatality occurred last night, as a man allegedly tried to take shelter in a shed and was killed.

A deadly tornado stuck the town of Adairsville, Georgia this morning leaving at least one dead and several more injuries.  The storm was embedded within a squall line and was moving extremely fast when it hit the town.  Before this fatality today, the US had set a record for most days without a tornado-related fatality with 220 days, since records had been kept in 1950.  Check out the INSANE video (below).

This was a classic high shear/low instability setup in the south, and isn't unusual as most people think.  Luckily, this event was forecasted several days in advance and after April 27th, 2011, people in Dixie Alley are more weather-aware than ever before.  Today's severe weather reports totaled 262, with 7 of those being tornadoes.

Don't forget to check out "Tornado Chasers" now available at a bulk rate of $19 for all episodes 1-12!  For updates on warnings and real-time weather information, be sure to follow Reed's Facebook fan page and Twitter account and stay informed!

Massive blizzard to impact the Northeast U.S.!

The largest winter storm event of 2012-2013 is underway, and locations from New York City to Maine are bracing for conditions that could ultimately result in record snow totals for some areas. Tropical storm-force winds--with gusts anticipated to be in excess of 50 MPH--in combination with heavy, 2-3 inch per-hour snowfall rates will result in blizzard conditions, and needless to say, will bring a significant threat for power outages and make driving extremely treacherous; in Massachusetts, the governor has declared a state of emergency, and has issued a ban on all non-essential travel beginning this afternoon.

We encourage residents or those with interests in the northeast to keep up with the latest information by monitoring local media and local National Weather Service offices. Reed will also be posting frequently on the event on Facebook and Twitter, as well as updating with bulletins at TVNweather.com.

Hattiesburg, MS tornado rated EF-4

Intense supercell thunderstorms raged across southern Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama on February 10, 2013; unfortunately, the town of Hattiesburg, MS, felt the brunt of a long-tracked, violent tornado produced by one of these powerful late winter storms.  Scott Peake of the Basehunters storm chase team made a great call in positioning his team in a prime area for tornadic development late in the afternoon, which allowed them to capture this astonishing close-range urban tornado footage (below). Scott also remained in contact with the local National Weather Service office in Jackson to keep them apprised of the behavior and location of the tornado. as it tracked toward and eventually into Hattiesburg. The Weather Service is still assessing the damage from several tornadoes that impacted their region, but late yesterday released an update to their initial survey and have determined that EF-4 damage exists in Hattiesburg. Thankfully--and incredibly--no fatalities are known to have occurred during this event as of this posting, though there have been several dozen reports of injuries. Without the collaborative efforts of storm chasers, NWS personnel, and local media, the situation for residents of Hattiesburg and surrounding communities would surely have been much different once the storms had passed.

Below is Scott's video, which begins with a monstrous multi-vortex tornado several miles outside of Hattiesburg, and follows the progress of the tornado as it enters and carves a path through the city.

Reed will be posting the latest updates to this story on his Facebook and Twitter pages, or at our sister site, TVNweather.com.]]>
